Garage Door Opener Troubleshooting: 10 Fixes Before You Call

Door won't close and the light blinks 10 times

Misaligned or obstructed photo eyes. Both LEDs should be solid; clean the lenses and re-aim until they are.

Opener hums but the door doesn't move

Usually a stripped drive gear or a broken trolley — or the emergency release was pulled. Re-engage the trolley by running the opener until it clicks back in.

Remote works, wall button doesn't (or vice versa)

A remote-only failure points to the wall-button wiring or a shorted terminal; a wall-only failure points to remote batteries or lost programming.

Door reverses before it closes

Close-force or travel limits set too tight, or a binding door. Never crank force up to mask a mechanical problem.

Nothing at all

Check the GFCI outlet, breaker, and the wall-lock/vacation switch.

Other quick wins

• Replace remote batteries and re-learn the remote.
• Reset Wi-Fi/MyQ if app control stopped working.
• Test with the opener disconnected — if the door is heavy by hand it's a spring problem, not the opener.
